Utrecht has no airport of its own. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is around 30 minutes away by direct train.

Walking

The city centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly, with the Dom Tower and Oudegracht canals all within easy walking distance.

Cycling

Utrecht is genuinely one of the best cycling cities in the world, with excellent infrastructure making bike rental the most natural way to get around.

Buses

City buses cover areas beyond the compact centre, though most visitors find walking or cycling sufficient.

Train connections

Utrecht Centraal is the Netherlands’ largest train station, with fast connections to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and destinations across the country.

Car not necessary

You do not need a car for Utrecht itself, and excellent train connections cover most day trips easily without one.

Rent a bike for at least part of your visit, since Utrecht is genuinely built for cycling. Use the train for day trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Gouda, all easy from Utrecht Centraal.

Best Time to Visit Utrecht

Utrecht works well across most seasons, though its huge student population means the atmosphere shifts noticeably between term time and holidays.

Spring

A pleasant time to visit, with mild temperatures and the city’s student energy in full swing during term time.

Summer

Warm and lively, with canal-side cafés at their busiest, though quieter than term time as students leave for the break.

Autumn

An excellent season, with the return of students bringing fresh energy back to the cafés and bars.

Winter

Cold and often wet, but the compact city centre and cosy canal-level cafés make Utrecht a genuinely pleasant winter city break.

MapMagnet tip

For a good balance of weather and student energy, aim for April, May, September or October. If you want the liveliest atmosphere, visiting during term time makes a real difference.

Know Before You Go

A few practical Utrecht tips can make your trip smoother. These are the things we would want to know before arriving.

Watch for cyclists everywhere

Utrecht has a strong cycling culture, so pay close attention to dedicated bike lanes when walking around the city.

Card payments are widely accepted

Most restaurants, shops and attractions in Utrecht take cards, and some smaller places may not accept cash at all.

Book the Dom Tower tour in advance

Tower access is only available via guided tour with limited spots, so booking ahead is worth it, especially in peak season.

Wear comfortable shoes

The city centre is compact but involves plenty of walking along canals and cobbled streets.

Term time changes the atmosphere significantly

Utrecht feels noticeably livelier during university term time versus summer holidays, so factor this in when choosing when to visit.

MapMagnet tip

Rent a bike even for a short visit. Experiencing Utrecht the way locals actually get around gives a genuinely different sense of the city than walking alone.
