Zagreb at a glance

Zagreb is Croatia’s compact, walkable capital, carrying genuine Austro-Hungarian architectural heritage from its time within that empire. The elegant Upper Town, crowned by St Mark’s Church and its distinctive tiled roof, sits above a lively Lower Town built around huge café culture and the genuinely quirky, beloved Museum of Broken Relationships. As an inland capital, Zagreb offers a relaxed, less-touristy alternative to Croatia’s coastal cities.

Know Before You Go

A few practical Zagreb tips can make your trip smoother. These are the things we would want to know before arriving.

Card payments are widely accepted

Most restaurants, shops and attractions in Zagreb take cards, though it is worth carrying some cash for smaller stalls at Dolac Market.

Wear comfortable shoes

The Upper Town’s cobbled streets look better than they feel underfoot on a long day of sightseeing.

Book ahead for December

Advent Zagreb draws significant crowds, so accommodation and popular restaurants can book up well in advance if visiting in December.

Embrace the café pace

Lingering over a single coffee on Tkalčićeva Street is a genuine local custom, not a sign to hurry, so relax into the rhythm rather than rushing.

Book Plitvice Lakes tickets in advance

This hugely popular national park can involve queues in peak season, so booking online ahead of time saves significant time.

MapMagnet tip

Give Zagreb genuine time rather than treating it as a quick stopover before the coast. The city’s understated charm and café culture reward a proper couple of days rather than a rushed half-day visit.
